Best Destinations for Budget Tropical Getaways

Everyone dreams of a tropical island getaway. However, not everyone can afford to pay $3000 a night for an overwater bungalow in the French Polynesia (if you can, please pack me in your suitcase).

Personally, I’m a big fan of holidaying on tropical islands but not such a big fan of the price tag. Luckily there are multiple locations where you can have the luxury for less.

Depending on where you’re travelling from, flights are likely to eat into most of your budget. If you are wanting to save money on flights, try travelling in the low season. Alternatively, you can use sites such as skyscanner to find the best air deals.

Bali

Whilst most people know Bali as a popular destination for partying. But there is another side to Bali that makes it a perfect luxury holiday destination. Bali is known as the Island of the Gods, and that is pretty damn accurate. Picture perfect beaches, incredible rainforests and endless accommodation options.

If world-class dining and beachfront hotels sound like your kind of thing make sure to visit Seminyak and Nusa Dua. With fine dining, luxurious resorts and boutique shopping, you can have a tropical getaway without spending a fortune. Beachfront resorts are usually the most pricey option, but staying a few blocks away from the beach can save you hundreds.

The wet season in Bali runs from October to April, but this is generally when you will find the best deals on accommodation. If you’re not afraid of the occasional afternoon thunderstorm, it’s a great time to visit. Just make sure to pack your tropical strength insect repellant because mosquitos also enjoy the wet season.

Budget topical destination: Bali

Thailand

You’re likely to find Thailand on every list ever about budget travel. Known for its lush rainforests, white sand beaches and cheap eats, Thailand is very popular amongst travellers who don’t want to break the bank.

Despite being one of the most popular destinations for backpackers, Thailand is home to some of the world’s most luxurious resorts. If relaxing on beach with a cocktail in hand is your idea of a holiday, you can’t look past Phuket and Koh Samui. Over the years, these areas have become popular among those looking to stay in super-exclusive luxury hotels. Whilst some of these properties can cost upwards of A$2000 a night, Thailand offers some incredible resorts for a fraction of the price.

Another plus about Thailand is that food can be dirt cheap. Street food is possibly one of the cheapest ways to eat during your travels. Generally it is far more affordable than eating in Western restaurants. Prices range from 20-35 THB for a meal (depending on what you order of course). And I must say, the street food is really damn good. I honestly enjoyed it more than eating in fancy restaurants.

Thailand: a destination for budget tropical holidays

Fiji

Made up of over 300 islands, Fiji is famous for its incredible scuba diving and pristine beaches. For a lot of travellers, Fiji is a stopover destination. But if you’re looking for a cheap island getaway, it is possibly one of the best locations for a budget holiday.

Whilst there are a few pricey resorts and restaurants, accommodation and food in Fiji is generally inexpensive. Accommodation on the islands will generally offer a “full board” option meaning all of your meals each day are included in the room price. This can save a lot of money as you won’t need to fork out extra cash for food during your stay.  Most resorts (and hostels too) offer free non-motorized water sports such as snorkelling, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding. This means you won’t have to spend hundreds to have a fun time.

If you’re really wanting to stick to a tight budget, make sure to check out my guide on how to travel to Fiji when you’re broke for the ultimate money-saving hacks.

Fiji is a great place for a budget getaway

The Philippines

The Philippines has become increasingly popular over the past few years and is possibly my favourite destination for budget travel. With its gorgeous beaches and relaxed tropical vibes, I highly recommend the Philippines as the ideal island getaway. Plus, with over 7,000 islands, you’re guaranteed not to run out of places to explore.

Shopping in the Philippines is very inexpensive, especially at local markets or shopping outlets. Local transport options are also super affordable such as Jeepneys which cost less than a dollar to use. As for activities in the Philippines, you guessed it, they’re insanely cheap. In some places, you can learn how to scuba dive for less than A$50. In summary, everything in the Philippines is so. damn. cheap.

If you’ve not yet had to chance to visit the Philippines and all its beauty, make sure to read my blog about what I learnt during my time exploring the pristine islands.

Boracay Island, The Philippines.

What tropical destination should I travel to next? I’d love to hear your recommendations in the comments below. If you have a favourite tropical getaway location, make sure to let me know (I may just add it to my list).

Until next time,
